You don’t have to be a news junkie to know that there is an increasing trend in home invasions and that violent crimes are “business as usual” anymore. There are a lot of “monsters” out there, and self defense should be on everyone’s mind; not just the minds of the avid gun toters and dedicated martial artists. That’s where the ZAP flashlight/Stun Gun comes in. This tool is a very effective option for those who don’t want to, or can’t carry a handgun for defense.

I honestly think the flashlight/stun gun mash-up is a fantastic idea. While the packaging suggest that there are only two uses for the flashlight/ stun gun; I have actually found three uses for this one package. And what is it that people say? Oh yes! “Two is one and one is none”. If you’ve never heard this phrase, it’s a phrase used by law enforcement, competitive shooters, preppers, and much more. It is referring to the almost certain fact that your plan or gear isn’t going to work exactly as planned, and backups are essential to staying on-top of the game…or attack. For this reason, I applaud ZAP thinking ahead and making this a versatile tool.
Use #1: Flashlight
The ultra bright LED bulb that ZAP put into this flashlight/ stun gun is a fine tool for finding your way around in the dark. As far as defense is concerned, it’s just as bright as many of the tactical flashlights out there. You can use it to temporarily blind an attacker, giving you the chance to flee or fight back. The nice part about the light is that you can use it without making direct contact with the aggressor.
Use #2: Stun Gun
This is the fun part! The aggressive zapping sound and light that this tool puts off is enough to make an attacker think twice before getting any closer to you. This baby boasts a 1 million volt taser that is more voltage then most law enforcement tasers.
Use #3: Impact Weapon
The sharp electrodes on the end of the light make for a great weapon. When held the way that is demonstrated in the video, you can put some force behind it and come out with a DNA sample at the very least.
If I could change one thing about the ZAP flashlight / stun gun it would be where the controls are located. I would like to see the option of activating the stun gun from a button on the base of the light. This would allow you to hold the light in a way that puts more force behind it as it makes contact with an attacker.
Although I’m not fond of the fact that this is a contact weapon, the light, along with the sound and sight of one million volts dancing across the electrodes is hopefully enough to deter any further contact. However, some attackers are determined, and it is important that note that this tool will probably not scare away someone who has made up their mind to hurt you.
Overall, I think this is a very versatile tool and can be an effective one if used properly. As with any weapon or tool, it is imperative that you learn how to use it properly and safely.
